In Los Angeles swim lessons for children are essential. Learning to swim is a necessary skill that can save your child’s life. The sooner the better to help your child develop a love and respect for the water and the skills to help themselves be safer in the water. I combine two time-tested methods for helping kids learn to swim independently and for developing an appreciation of and respect for the water.
The first method I use is the “No Nonsense Method” or "Bradbury Method" that legendary swim instructor Tom Bradbury learned in Hawaii in the 1950s. Tom brought this highly effective method to Southern California and trained Bill Marsh (Swim To Bill) who trained Ethan Phillips (Swim To Ethan) who trained me. This method, based largely on consistency and psychology, has been perfected over the years and used to teach thousands of kids to swim. I am proud to carry on this legacy and grateful for Ethan teaching me the method that he has used and further developed to effectively help kids learn to be safer in the water.
The second method I use comes from the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program. I have been certified as a Water Safety Instructor, the Red Cross’s gold standard that provides their most comprehensive training for swim instructors. I use elements of my Red Cross training to refine and expand children’s swimming skills and teach them how to be safe in and around the water.
All classes happen at my heated pool in Sherman Oaks; I do not currently teach at any other pools or private residences.
9-day Intensive (private or group) - For ages 3 and up my 9-day intensive is designed to help children learn to move themselves through the water without the assistance of floatation devices or being held by a parent, increasing their safety and enjoyment in the water. The intensive can save you time and money moving your child toward independence in the water compared to ongoing weekly lessons that can take much longer. Classes run Monday through Friday of the first week and Monday through Thursday of the second week. Each PRIVATE intensive class has 1 swimmer in the water with me and runs for 15 minutes each day. Each GROUP intensive class has up to 3 swimmers together in the water with me and runs for 30 minutes each day. For group intensives if you are not enrolling with friends or siblings as a group of three then I will pair your child with others to form a class of three.
9-day Parent & Child Pre-intensive - For ages 2 to 3 years old my Parent & Child Pre-intensive can help your child get acclimated to the water and learn fundamental swimming and water safety skills while teaching you how to safely support and assist them in the water. Each child has one parent or guardian in the water with them during class. For kids who are accustomed to being held by a parent in the water or have trouble separating from the parent, the Parent & Child Pre-intensive can gradually help them get used to being in the water with my assistance in addition to that of the parent, preparing them to take my 9-day intensive after they turn 3 years old. Classes run Monday through Friday of the first week and Monday through Thursday of the second week. Each GROUP pre-intensive class has up to 3 parent/child couples together in the water with me and runs for 30 minutes each day. TO ENROLL IN A GROUP PARENT & CHILD PRE-INTENSIVE YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN GROUP OF THREE FRIENDS OR SIBLINGS TO RESERVE A TIME SLOT TOGETHER; THERE ARE NO INDIVIDUAL CLASS SPOTS AVAILABLE FOR GROUP CLASSES. Each PRIVATE pre-intensive class has 1 parent/child couple in the water with me and runs for 15 minutes each day.
